Part-time hourly jobs do not require students to register for summer classes. Employers must be familiar with the Iowa rules regarding student employment. The law restricts student employment hours to twenty hours per academic year. Students can only work for 40 hours during the Thanksgiving, winter, spring and summer vacations.

Hourly work limits

Overtime is not covered by Work Study dollars if a student works more that forty hours per week. Hourly work limits are also determined by the amount of Work-Study dollars received each week.


According to the University of Iowa's Handbook for New Students students, no student should work more than 20 hours per weeks. This is a large amount of time. Students who work more than that may struggle to find enough time to study and succeed at school. Employers are encouraged not to post student job openings in handshake unless they conform with state law.

Form I-9 required

For students, it might be a concern that the University of Iowa requires Form I-9 certification. These important documents can be used to confirm the identity of employees and determine whether they are employed on the campus. These forms are required lawfully and serve to protect the university in case of fraudulent claims. You can always consult the school's HR office to confirm that a student position does not require Form I-9.

Students who are paid for their services must complete Form I-9 no later than three business days after they start their employment. In addition to submitting the form, students are required to present their identity documents to the Student Employment Office, such as a passport, birth certificate, or SS card. Payroll biweekly

Your paycheck is sent out biweekly to employees who are University of Iowa employees. Biweekly schedules pay employees who worked in the preceding calendar month. Except for semester appointments that require you to work more hours, you will be paid your paycheck the week after. Pay adjustments are also available in biweekly pay plans.

Log in to Employee self-service and choose the Payroll tab. Then click View Paycheck History. For access to your Payroll Services account you will need your employee ID and your name.
